Andi Weimann bridges the Wolves and Aston Villa divide, yet an FA Cup shock at Anfield remains his standout Wolves memory as Molineux prepares for Villa and for Liverpool in quick succession.

His four month loan in 2016/17 began with a substitute outing at Norwich, then a first start in the FA Cup at Liverpool. Wolves, 18th in the Championship, won 2-1 under Paul Lambert, Richard Stearman headed early and Weimann added a second, Divock Origi replied late as Wolves moved into the Fifth Round.

“That goal and that day, those are memories you never forget. I still remember that away end being full, so many Wolves fans, and then we got the early goal and I managed to add a second.” Weimann tells the Express & Star.

“I thought he had maybe delayed it too much but he actually played the perfect pass. The keeper came out and I managed to take it around him and put it in the net. Liverpool pulled a goal back late on by which time I had come off, but we hung on for the win and there were some great scenes in front of all those fans at full time.”

Reuniting with Lambert offered a timely lift after earlier first-team breaks at Villa under Kevin MacDonald and Alex McLeish. He first arrived in Birmingham aged 15, and has now returned on loan from Derby to Rapid Vienna, where he played as a youngster.
