Andoni Iraola Assesses Liverpool Defeat to Leeds as Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak Step Up Fitness

Liverpool closed their pre-season tour of the United States with a 4-2 defeat to Leeds United in Chicago, but the broader message from Andoni Iraola was one of assessment, fitness-building and useful information ahead of the new campaign.

At half-time, Liverpool were in control. Goals from Luke Chambers and Florian Wirtz had put them 2-0 up and there were encouraging signs in possession. After the break, however, Leeds responded strongly through Brenden Aaronson, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who scored twice, and Sean Longstaff to flip the game on its head.

Iraola finds value in Leeds defeat

Speaking after the match, Iraola made clear that the result was secondary to the lessons available from it. “I think we learn a lot of things. Obviously it’s not the result you want but I think [it was] probably the most useful friendly we played – in a positive way in the first half and in a negative way in the second half. I think we’ve learned a lot from today and I think we can take good conclusions and solve some things.”

That assessment will resonate inside the camp. Liverpool saw enough in the opening period to be encouraged, while the second-half collapse offered a timely reminder of the work still required before competitive football begins.

Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak make first appearances

There was also attention on several key individuals making their first pre-season appearances, with Wirtz, Alexander Isak and Ryan Gravenberch all getting 45 minutes. Iraola was broadly pleased by what he saw. “I think they did really good. They played their first 45 minutes. Obviously Florian and Alex, because they were playing in the first half, they had an easier game or a better game. Ryan, it was costly for him.”

Wirtz in particular made an impression, finding the net and showing flashes of quality between the lines, while Isak’s return to action was another important step in Liverpool’s preparations.

Jeremie Frimpong fitness latest

One issue monitored closely was Jeremie Frimpong, who was substituted after feeling discomfort. Iraola moved quickly to ease concern, saying: “Jeremie [Frimpong] asked for the sub [but] I don’t think it’s an injury. It was just some overload and I hope he’s not injured in that way. I don’t think we’ve lost anyone.”

That will come as a welcome update, with Liverpool keen to avoid setbacks as the squad builds rhythm and sharpness.

Liverpool tour leaves clear next steps

Reflecting on the trip more widely, Iraola praised the scale of the club and the support following the team abroad. “You all work very well! At the end, you can see straight away that this is a massive club [with] all the supporters that we have, even overseas. We want to get ready [for] the start of the season – that is when people want to see us play well and get results.”

For Liverpool, the final score in Chicago will matter less than the clarity it provided. The tour is over, the fitness work is advancing and Iraola now has sharper evidence of what needs refining before the real business starts.
