However, after watching his former side get caught on the counter-attack in the fourth minute in the 2-2 draw against Newcastle on Sunday afternoon, Sturridge is of the opinion that Liverpool missed a trick by not signing Brentford midfielder Mamadou Sangare.

"I think the team needs a defensive midfielder, personally," Sturridge told Sky Sports.

"We have been talking about a defensive midfielder at Liverpool for the last three years and I think [Ryan] Gravenberch coming into the team and playing consistently and Liverpool winning the Premier League sort of changed that philosophy.

"But if you actually analyse the midfield, then they're all naturally more attacking players.

As Andoni Iraola looks to bolster forward line before the transfer window closes, Sturridge has suggested that Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh would be a better fit than Barcola due to the existing options already at the club.

“If I’m buying a winger at Liverpool, I’m rather go right-wing because I’ve got options on the left.

“I’m not sure about bringing in another left-winger, personally.”

Liverpool are back in action on Saturday at home to Nottingham Forest in what will be the final game before transfer Deadline Day.
