Columbus reached last season's MLS play-offs and begin the 2026 campaign on 21 February against Portland Timbers. The move follows club great Darlington Nagbe's retirement at the end of 2025, and new head coach Henrik Rydström has taken charge.

Gomes joined Valencia in 2014 on loan from Benfica, then was bought the following year for around €20 million. He made 119 appearances, scored eight and supplied nine assists, and was central to the 2015 Champions League qualification under Nuno Espírito Santo.

Barcelona signed him in 2016 for a fixed €35 million with add-ons tied to variables, including a €15 million payment if he won the Ballon d'Or.

Across his club career he has played 383 matches with 32 goals and 29 assists, featuring for Benfica, Valencia, Barcelona, Everton and Lille. Born in Grijó, he has 29 Portugal caps and was part of the Euro 2016-winning squad, among eight trophies for club and country.
