Andreas Christensen had more than just a victory to celebrate after Barcelona’s 5-2 win over Rayo Vallecano.

As such, the Danish defender made his 100th appearance for the Catalan club, reaching a landmark that carried particular significance after the difficult periods he has experienced with injuries since arriving.

Christensen was presented with a commemorative shirt by his teammates after the final whistle, marking a century of appearances in Barcelona colours. 

The moment clearly carried emotional weight for the 30-year-old, who reflected on what the achievement meant to him and his family.

“I’m very happy. This means a lot to me. It took time to reach this moment, but it means a great deal to me and my family. 

“We’ve felt welcome from day one; we love being here and we’re looking forward to what lies ahead. Right now, this means a lot to us and we’re very happy,” Christensen said.

Christensen reflects on difficult years at Barcelona

Christensen made a strong impression during his first two seasons at Barcelona, establishing himself as a reliable option in defence.

The following two campaigns were considerably more complicated, with injuries disrupting his rhythm and limiting his availability.

“I got off to a great start in my first two seasons, but injuries affected the next two,” Christensen admitted.

Despite those setbacks, the defender stressed that he never felt disconnected from the managers who worked with him.

“I always felt I had a good relationship with the managers and that they trusted me enough to pick me for matches, even during difficult times.”

That trust appears to have been important during a period when Christensen was forced to watch from the sidelines.

“For me, it was about rediscovering the joy of the game, enjoying the matches and approaching each one on its own merits,” he explained.

Christensen believes Champions League glory is possible

Interestingly, Christensen’s son was in the stands to watch him make his 100th Barcelona appearance, making the achievement even more memorable for the family.

Later in the interview, the defender was asked whether he believes the team can finally win the Champions League, and his answer was emphatic.

“We are capable of doing it.”

The Danish international believes Barcelona’s performances over the previous two seasons have already demonstrated that they possess the necessary quality to compete for Europe’s biggest prize.

“We’ve shown that over the last two seasons. I’ve experienced it from both perspectives – both off the pitch and as a player – and I can sense that the atmosphere within and around the team reflects everyone’s conviction that we have what it takes to win it all.”

The defender’s final message was less about making grand predictions and more about maintaining the right mentality.

“That’s our aim this season: to approach every match and every title individually,” Christensen concluded.
