Although the team travel to Paris on Saturday to defend their Coupe de France title against Toulouse, Nantes’ primary concern this spring will be staying up in Ligue 1, with the relegation battle set to go down to the wire.
Les Canaris are currently level on points with 17th-placed Brest – the bottom teams spots go down to Ligue 2 this season – and are winless in nine, in contract with their impressive cup run. A potential relegation, even if they return to the Europa League, would inevitably impact the make-up of the squad next year.
According to L’Équipe this afternoon, Brazilian defender Andrei Girotto is close to agreeing a two-year extension which would take his time on the banks of the Loire up to 2026 – on the condition that the team stays in the top flight next season. The defender, who is sometimes deployed in midfield, has been with the club since 2017 and is closing in on 200 appearances with Nantes in all competitions. Talks have also been opened over a potential extension for midfielder Samuel Moutoussamy as well.
