After his option was declined during the end-of-the-year roster decisions, New York City FC announced that midfielder Andrés Perea is back. The player signed a new contract through the 2027-2028 season, with a one-year option. In other words, he will be with the Bronx side when they move over to Queens and when Major League Soccer changes the season calendar.

To be honest, it was a little shocking when NYCFC did not pick up his option. However, after some thought and hearing other opinions, it did make sense. Perea was injured and will likely be out for a good portion of the 2026 season. Hence, this was a good time to create a new contract with his brilliant 2025 season in mind.

Andrés Perea has a new contract

This year, Perea scored three times and had two assists in his 31 appearances in all competitions with NYCFC. He played where Pascal Jansen needed him, whether it was the defensive midfield, central midfield, or left midfield. He was solid entering the attack and easily could partner with anyone defensively, especially Justin Haak and Aiden O'Neill. And of course, the defensive midfield was where he shone the brightest.

His versatility and the fact that he had his best season with the Bronx side made his return an easy choice for the club. Yes, he will be out for some time. Hopefully, his recovery will be on the shorter end.

It also made sense for Perea. He told newyorkcityfc.com, "The past two-and-a-half years with New York City have been incredibly good for me. I’ve felt so much love from the City, my teammates, the entire staff, and the fans, making me truly happy here. I’m really excited to sign a new contract with New York City and continue this journey with Los Celestes."

The midfielder added, "As a team, we’re doing everything we can to win another MLS Cup. I will continue to work hard and to develop as a player to achieve that goal. I look forward to this upcoming season, as I truly believe it will be a special one. To the passionate New York City fans, stay with us, support us, and we’ll continue to give everything we have to bring more trophies home.”

It is good that NYCFC brought him back. It would not be a great look if he were injured and they let him go. But his return was highly likely. Again, he had a fantastic season and has really grown as a player. Why would either party not want a reunion?
