Former Leeds United favourite Andrew Hughes has been appointed set-piece coach at Athletic Club.

The club said in a statement that the Englishman will be their set-piece specialist and will join next Monday, having worked in that role with Scotland at the World Cup. It added that he has held coaching posts at Crystal Palace, Leicester City, Norwich City, Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield United and Bolton Wanderers.

Hughes spent three years at Elland Road from 2007 to 2010, making 139 appearances in all competitions. He was part of Simon Grayson’s League One promotion-winning squad in 2009/10.

After retiring in 2015, he worked across the EFL and was most recently on Leicester City’s staff. He left the Foxes to take up a short-term role with Steve Clarke’s Scotland for the World Cup.

Athletic appointed Edin Terzic as head coach earlier this month. The 43-year-old will have Hughes among his backroom team.

Marcelo Bielsa previously made his European mark with Athletic, overseeing a 3-2 Europa League win at Manchester United before a 2-1 victory in Bilbao to eliminate Sir Alex Ferguson’s side.

The Bilbao club finished 12th in 2025/26 in a tight La Liga, six places above relegated Mallorca yet separated by only three points.
