Andrew Hughes, a former Leeds United favourite, has been appointed set-piece coach at La Liga side Athletic Club.
The club said in a statement that he will be the set-piece specialist and is due to report for duty next Monday, having carried out the same role with Scotland at the World Cup.
Hughes spent three years at Elland Road from 2007 to 2010, making 139 appearances in all competitions and helping Simon Grayson’s side win promotion from League One in 2009/10.
After retiring in 2015, he moved into coaching across the EFL with spells at Crystal Palace, Leicester City, Norwich City, Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield United and Bolton Wanderers.
Athletic confirmed the appointment of Edin Terzic as head coach earlier this month. The 43-year-old will have Hughes on his staff to oversee set plays.
Marcelo Bielsa also worked at Athletic Club, leading a standout 3-2 Europa League last-32 first-leg win at Manchester United before a 2-1 home victory sealed progress.
Athletic finished 12th in 2025/26 in a tight La Liga table. They ended six places above relegated Mallorca, yet only three points separated the two clubs.
