Brentford head coach Keith Andrews has commended Kevin Schade and Vitaly Janelt after the pair intervened to shield a Nigerian security guard from racist abuse.

According to Hounslow Herald, reports in March said two Brentford players were left bloodied in a 2am altercation in Richmond while travelling home from a goalless draw at Leeds. Their identities were confirmed in court this week.

Wimbledon Magistrates' Court was told the players stepped in to defend Israel Ilesanmi from David Wheeler, 63, who was left with a black eye. The court heard Wheeler had drunk seven cans of beer, filmed the guard and used a racist slur, questioning his right to be in the country. He then turned abusive towards Schade and Janelt, referencing their German nationality.

Andrews said he learned of the incident early the next morning. He felt the players’ actions were understandable and protective in a distasteful situation, and said he was comfortable with their conduct.

He added that their response reflected the club’s values and the dressing room culture. Brentford, he said, is multicultural and built on respect for different backgrounds and beliefs.

Schade and Janelt had permission to travel back from the Leeds match on Saturday night, which is why they were out in the early hours. Wheeler was fined a month’s wages, £1,699, plus £150 compensation to Ilesanmi.
