Andy Carroll has revealed he was sexually assaulted in 2021 while playing for Newcastle United. The disclosure appears in his new autobiography, ‘Owning It’, ahead of his subsequent move to West Bromwich Albion.

ExpressAndStar.com reports that the former England striker, now 37, described an incident involving a male celebrity and told a court he could not forget it, saying it left him humiliated, embarrassed and horrified.

The attacker denied the charge but was convicted after a trial. He received a three-year prison sentence, was placed on the National Sex Offender Register and was barred from entering the village where Carroll lived.

Carroll wrote that the assault happened the day after a Newcastle match in 2021, when a “celebrity mate” of his former partner invited himself to Carroll’s home to watch a boxing bout. He sensed something was wrong, felt light-headed after a few drinks and went to bed.

He said he woke to the man attempting to perform a sex act under his bedsheet. Carroll tried to remove him, then struck him when he attempted to return, before calling the police in tears.

He added that he debated including the episode with partner Lou Teasdale before deciding at the last minute, hoping it might help other victims. Carroll said the trauma affected every part of his life and has not gone away.

Carroll joined Albion on a free transfer in January 2022, scoring three goals in 15 appearances. He now plays for Dagenham & Redbridge, where he is also a co-owner.
