Solly March remains a free agent after his Brighton exit, and these two Championship clubs should make their move

Solly March remains a free agent despite Southampton showing an interest in the forward during the summer transfer window.

The former Brighton star remains available for clubs to sign, provided they have the room to spare in their squad, because he’s not attached to any team at the moment.

The 32-year-old departed the Seagulls at the end of the previous campaign, calling time on a lengthy stint with the Premier League side.

He made just four appearances in the league last season, taking his total tally of games for the Sussex outfit to 300, having broken into the first team from the academy system.

It remains to be seen what the next step will be for March in his career, with clubs still able to register free agents outside of the transfer window.

Here we look at two Championship sides who should look to make their move after Southampton’s previous interest…

West Ham

West Ham have made a solid start to the new Championship season, with Nuno Espirito Santo looking to guide the club back to the Premier League at the first attempt.

The Hammers haven’t been short of goals from their opening eight games, scoring on 22 occasions already, which is the most in the division by a decent margin.

But the London outfit could still use someone like March in their squad for when the fixture list gets its most demanding.

Currently, there are no alternatives to Jarrod Bowen that quite fit the same mould of player as the talisman.

But March should be a good option to have on the bench, so that the club captain isn’t forced into playing every minute of a gruelling campaign.

The 32-year-old’s experience will also make him a valuable member of the dressing room, as he knows what kind of standard needs to be set at the London Stadium as they push for a top two finish.

With a 24-man squad already named, there is room for one more and someone of March’s stature would be a wise choice to take up the 25th slot.

West Brom

It’s been a positive start to the season for West Brom under James Morrison, who are fighting at the top end of the table in these early months.

The Baggies finished 21st in the previous campaign, so fans have every reason to be optimistic about the coming months after winning four of their first eight fixtures.

And the 23-man squad named by Albion at the close of the window means there is room for two free agent signings.

As a result, March should absolutely be on their radar as an option that can provide both attacking depth and quality leadership to Morrison’s team.

West Brom have a very young squad, with just two players over the age of 30, and an inexperienced head coach.

Someone with March’s experience of the top level could be an incredibly valuable asset to have in the team.

If he can also remain fit, then there’s no doubt he can contribute in the final third at this level.

Provided his wage demands are within the financial structure at the Hawthorns, this could be a shrewd piece of business they can look at during the international break.
