Andy Carroll, 37, reveals in his autobiography Owning It that he was sexually assaulted in 2021, saying the trauma has not faded.

According to L'Équipe, the former Newcastle and Liverpool striker added the account at the last moment after long talks with his editor and partner Lou Teasdale, 42. He says revisiting it is frightening, and that it had previously been known only to a small circle, but hopes sharing it might help even one person.

Carroll writes that the incident followed a match in the south of England while he was with Newcastle. Persuaded by ex-partner Billi Mucklow, 38, to invite home a man, a famous acquaintance of hers he had always found odd, he went to bed after a few drinks and felt dizzy. He woke to find the man beside him attempting to perform oral sex, struck him forcefully, then called police while seeking safety with his children’s nanny.

He says the impact remains part of his daily life. By confronting it in print rather than trying to bury it, he hopes to regain some control.

Carroll, an England international with nine caps and two goals, is player, coach and co-owner at Dagenham and Redbridge in the English sixth tier. The man he accused denied the offence but was sentenced to three years in prison.
