Leicester City have taken Dujuan Richards on loan from Chelsea to play on the wing, a call that recasts their deadline-day business.
According to LeicesterMercury.co.uk, interim boss Andy King explained that the 20-year-old will operate off the right, providing competition for Abdul Fatawu, rather than arriving as an out-and-out striker.
Richards has largely been a centre-forward until this season, when he has featured on the right for Chelsea’s Under-21s. He believes he can play wide, up front or as a number 10, and King views him as versatile, but most at ease on the flank.
That stance leaves Jordan Ayew and Patson Daka as the main striking options, with neither having found consistent goals so far. It suggests Richards will not be considered direct competition for them, so one of the pair is likely to start.
The other fresh attacking option is Divine Mukasa, whom King sees as a creative presence. The teenager is more likely to compete with Bobby De Cordova-Reid for the number 10 role.
King described Richards as quick and powerful with a fierce left foot, someone who can change games and cover across the frontline. He added that the youngster has much to learn out of possession and will grasp Championship demands by playing.
Richards is in contention to debut against Birmingham this weekend. If he features, it would be his first senior appearance in English football.
