Angelo Fulgini has switched international allegiance to New Caledonia, the midfielder moving to represent his mother’s homeland with the 2026 World Cup in view.
The change was listed on FIFA’s nationality switch platform on Monday. The 29-year-old, born in Abidjan, is on loan at Al-Taawoun.
Speaking to Foot Mercato in November, he said: "I am starting to think about it, I think my mother would be proud with regard to our island." He said New Caledonia coach Thierry Sardo had been in touch several times, adding: "I am thinking about it, I have spoken to my mother, since the coach called me. Why not try to help and take part in this experience. It is always beautiful to represent your parents’ origins."
He can now take part in the intercontinental play-offs in March against Jamaica, and perhaps dream of a first ever World Cup with New Caledonia.
A former SCO Angers and RC Lens player, he won three caps for France Under-21s.
