The Scotland international's contract has been allowed to expire, but he's clearly unhappy at how the situation has played out

Angus Gunn has criticised the hierarchy at Norwich City for how they dealt with his contract situation, having been one of the players announced as leaving at the end of his deal this summer.

A Canaries academy graduate, Gunn's third stint at Carrow Road will officially come to an end on June 30, when his current contract expires.

City are set to go in a different direction for their goalkeeping department under new head coach Liam Manning, with Plymouth Argyle stopper Daniel Grimshaw set to arrive in a £600,000 deal as one of multiple expected incomings, and whilst Gunn may agree with the decision on his time coming to an end, he doesn't necessarily like how the club went about it.

Angus Gunn takes swipe at Norwich City for how they dealt with his contract saga

An experienced goalkeeper at Championship level, Gunn has played for Norwich 172 times across two spells as a professional in Norfolk, having also spent time in their academy before moving to Man City as a teenager.

The Scotland international was first-choice goalkeeper under Johannes Hoff Thorup this past season, appearing 35 times in Championship action, but having ranked the second-lowest in the division for goals prevented, with only Luton Town's Thomas Kaminski below him, it was viewed as a below-par campaign for the 29-year-old.

It had already been confirmed prior to the announcement of Norwich's retained list that Gunn would be departing after a four-year stint, but he revealed that he hadn't been given a real reason as to why he'd been released, in what was just a two-minute conversation with sporting director Ben Knapper.

And Gunn has now issued a further dig at the club's hierarchy, and perhaps Knapper directly, in regards to how they handled the situation.

“Yes, I’m over it,” Gunn told STV when asked if he had processed his exit from Carrow Road yet.

“It was something that I felt personally they could have handled better.

"But ultimately, I think the decision was probably the right one from both sides for me to move on and go somewhere else in my career. I’m really excited for it."

Angus Gunn will look to prove Norwich City wrong in 2025-26 - he could potentially get a Championship move

Gunn will probably be the first to admit that the 2024-25 season didn't pan out as he would have hoped or expected, and the writing was perhaps on the wall for his Norwich career after some poor performances.

As he has revealed, the parting of ways was probably best for all involved, albeit the way it was done definitely wasn't in his eyes, but now it will be a case of trying to prove Knapper and co wrong next season.

Gunn, given his experience in the game and still only being 29 years old, will be hoping for a Championship move to come his way you'd imagine, and if he does land that, then he will be on a mission to right the wrongs of the season that has just gone.
