Barcelona are hoping to offload several players during the upcoming summer transfer window, and one of those is Ansu Fati. The winger, who was regarded as one of the best young players in the world when he first broke into the first team as a 16-year-old, is set to depart, with AS Monaco closing in on a permanent deal.

The Ligue 1 side intend to trigger the €11m purchase option in their loan agreement with Barcelona from last summer. Fati himself has accepted the move, and yet, things have not progressed in the last week or two, which is causing concern to those in Monaco.

According to MD, Barcelona are the reason for the hold-up. The Catalans are trying to negotiate the agreement with Monaco to include a buy-back clause, as they want to retain control of Fati’s future in the event that he continues taking strides after a promising first season in the Principality.

Barcelona are concerned about Fati continuing his rise back to the top with Monaco, which would leave him open to join a direct competitor in the Champions League. As such, they want to have preferential treatment when it comes to be possibility of him leaving the Ligue 1 club, who are yet to make their stance clear on the matter.

Barcelona may have to sacrifice part of €11m transfer fee

It must be remembered that Monaco are under no obligation to adhere to Barcelona’s request. They are free to activate the clause before it expires at the end of this month, but if the Catalans persist with plans for a buy-back clause, or a significant sell-on clause, they would surely push to lower the price of €11m.

The most important thing for Barcelona is getting Fati’s inflated salary off their books. At this stage, this does seem likely, even if the deal is currently progress at a slow pace.
