Ansu Fati’s father reveals Hansi Flick following Barcelona exit

Earlier this week, Ansu Fati left Barcelona in order to sign for Ligue 1 side AS Monaco on a permanent basis. The 23-year-old, who impressed at the Monegasque club during his loan spell last season, leaves Catalonia after 15 years, although the back-to-back La Liga champions have retained a significant sell-on clause as part of the deal.

Fati broke on to the scene in 2019 as a 16-year-old, but after suffering a serious knee injury, he was never the same player for Barcelona. He quickly fell out of favour under Xavi Hernandez and then Hansi Flick, and the latter gave the green light for Monaco to secure a transfer this summer.

In the summer of 2024, Fati had been given hope that Flick could turn around his fortunes at Barcelona, although he would manage only 11 appearances during the 2024-25 season before being loaned out to Monaco last summer. And at the very end, the German did not speak with Fati upon making the decision to leave, as confirmed by his father Bori Fati (via Sport).

“No, he never spoke to him, and nothing happened that made him reconsider his decision to leave. The agreement was closed today after agreeing on all the details, and we were waiting for Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, will return from his vacation in Brazil. There were some final details that needed to be agreed with Monaco, so the process dragged on a little longer in the last few days, but today everything is finalised.”

Barcelona will continue keeping tabs on Fati

It made a lot of sense for Fati to leave Barcelona. He can now focus on kickstarting his career under much less pressure that he has been when still associated with the Catalan giants, and Monaco is an excellent place for him to do this. As for Flick, he’s unlikely to keep an eye on him, although there is little doubt that sporting director Deco will be one of several personnel to continue monitoring the La Masia graduate in the years to come.
