Liverpool have completed the signing of Ronald Araujo from Barcelona on a season-long loan, with the deal also including an option to make the Uruguay international’s move permanent.
The 27-year-old arrives at Anfield to bolster a defence that has lost Ibrahima Konate to Real Madrid this summer. The Reds will reportedly pay no loan fee but will cover Araujo’s wages, while the purchase option is understood to be worth around £47 million.
Araujo joined Barcelona from Boston River in 2018 and went on to establish himself as a key member of the Catalan side, making 213 appearances and scoring 14 goals. He won three La Liga titles and two Copa del Rey trophies during his seven years at the club.
However, injuries and fitness issues restricted his involvement last season, with Araujo starting just 11 league matches despite making 38 appearances across all competitions.
The defender can operate at both centre-back and right-back, giving Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola another experienced option at the back.
