FC Barcelona summer signing Anthony Gordon continued his impressive World Cup campaign with a standout display as England defeated co-hosts Mexico 3-2 to secure a place in the quarter-finals.
The winger, who was signed by the Blaugrana from Newcastle United in a deal worth €80 million, was one of the most influential players for Thomas Tuchel’s side, playing a decisive role in one of England’s biggest victories of the tournament.
Starting on the night ahead of former on-loan Barcelona star Marcus Rashford, Gordon’s biggest impact came when he won the penalty that Harry Kane converted for the decisive goal, but his overall performance was equally impressive.
Constantly stretching the Mexican defence with his pace and direct running, the winger was involved in several of England’s most dangerous attacking moves throughout the match.

The 25-year-old produced an all-round display that highlighted both his attacking quality and defensive work rate.
One of the biggest assets of the Englishman’s game is his pace, which was on full display against Mexico as he recorded a top speed of 35.7 km/h, the fastest by any player in the match.
As for his overall numbers, Gordon finished with 41 touches on the night, while having one shot on target. He also managed seven successful passes from 11 attempted, including one key pass, and two successful dribbles from 6 attempts.
On the defensive side of things, the Barcelona summer signing completed four ball recoveries and three clearances, while winning nine of his ground duels on the night.
Gordon’s performance offered another reminder of why Barcelona moved to sign the England international.
His combination of pace, work rate and ability to influence matches at both ends of the pitch was on full display, with his penalty-winning run ultimately proving decisive in sending England into the last eight.
After enjoying a productive campaign with Newcastle United, The winger continues to build momentum at the World Cup and will arrive in Barcelona on the back of some of the best football of his career.
