Leeds United midfielder Anton Stach finally reached Julian Nagelsmann after a bout of phone tag to learn of his Germany call-up, prompting joyous shouts at home.

According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, it is four years since Stach was last in the national set-up and he will join the squad to face Switzerland and Ghana during the upcoming international window.

He spotted a missed call from a German number, rang back with no answer, then took a return call on loudspeaker. Nagelsmann introduced himself and Stach was stunned as his wife and a friend overheard and celebrated.

The 27-year-old kept the celebration low-key, dropping his friend at Leeds station, grabbing shawarma in the city centre and enjoying the sunshine.

At Thorp Arch on Thursday, ahead of Saturday’s meeting with Brentford, team-mates who had seen the news offered their congratulations.

Manager Daniel Farke felt the call-up was deserved, highlighting Stach’s consistency in the Premier League, swift adaptation, defensive work, duels, end product and influence on attacks. He described the midfielder as a key player and said such form gives anyone a chance of national recognition.
