Benfica are facing mounting pressure over António Silva’s contract. Negotiations have dragged for months and the centre-back has yet to accept the club’s proposal.
A Bola reports that the Portugal international will enter his final year in 2026/27 with no agreement in place, a situation increasing internal pressure to avoid him leaving for a reduced fee or even for free.
In October, Rui Costa, then seeking re-election as president, said the renewal was on track. That has not materialised, with no breakthrough since.
One factor behind the impasse has been linked to the player’s discontent. He has alternated starts with spells on the bench, a pattern José Mourinho has not typically used, and when selected he generally displaces compatriot Tomás Araújo.
This season Silva has made 29 appearances for Benfica, 13 in the Liga Portugal Betclic, 10 in the Champions League, four in the Taça de Portugal, one in the Taça da Liga and one in the Supertaça. Across 2,294 minutes he has produced strong performances, and he is valued at €30 million.
