Along with Real Madrid, the Blaugrana were the last standing member of the rogue league, which has been a dream project of Florentino Perez.

The Super League initiative, first unveiled in April 2021, was a breakaway competition proposed by twelve of Europe’s top clubs. Founding members included Real Madrid, Juventus, Manchester United, Chelsea and Barcelona.

The Super League’s aim was to give elite clubs greater control over revenue streams and offer an alternative to UEFA’s Champions League.

The plan sparked immediate outrage. Fans, football authorities and governments condemned it as a closed-shop competition threatening the sport’s competitive balance.

Within 48 hours, nine of the twelve founding members had withdrawn, leaving only Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Juventus still committed, before the Bianconeri also backed away.

And, with relations between Barça and Real Madrid deteriorating quite rapidly in recent months, the Blaugrana had distanced themselves from the Super League project for some time now.

It had seen the Catalans strengthen their ties with UEFA as well as the ECA, led by PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi. Now, they have officially announced their exit from the project, leaving Real Madrid standing by themselves.
