He made 382 appearances for Boca, scored 28 goals and won six national titles, including league crowns in 1962, 1964, 1965 and 1969, and the 1969 Copa Argentina.

Born in Tigre on 16 May 1937, he joined Boca’s youth ranks in 1955 and made his top-flight debut the following year. He spent 14 seasons with the side.

For Argentina, he played 32 times across a decade, going to Chile 1962 and England 1966, captaining the latter. He also featured at the 1959 and 1967 Copas América and won the 1964 Copa de las Naciones.

One of the defining moments of his career came in the 1966 quarter-final against hosts England, when he was sent off. The protests and his exit from the pitch entered football history and later led to FIFA introducing referee cards.

In 2015 he was honoured with a statue at the Museo de la Pasión Boquense. He was also a Libertadores runner-up in 1963.
