Appointing Russell Martin? New Rangers Board About to Make Same Mistakes

Today’s breaking news of Russell Martin closing in on the Rangers job after weeks of speculation came as something of a shock to fans, with the notion that a borderline failed Championship manager/Premier League manager, who could only win two of 17 fixtures at the top level, is apparently the answer to Rangers problems.

It is safe to say that Rangers fans are hardly thrilled with this one. An Ibrox Noise poll discovered it was 95% against. Hardly a ringing endorsement. The big problem we have here is that this is the kind of appointment that previous boards would make. Yes, plural. Previous regimes. Plural. We are stuck once again with low ambition in terms of the boardroom. They’re not picking a marquee manager. Not a top name. Not somebody with winning in their blood. Not even a Rangers man, strictly speaking. No, once again, the powers that be at Ibrox, whoever indeed they end up being at any given time, are going for the cheap option.

We at Ibrox Noise were not particularly in favour of David Ancelotti. We didn’t particularly want Steven Gerrard. We weren’t particularly impressed by Francesco Farioli either. And we sure as heck did not want Russell Martin. A championship manager. Someone who doesn’t understand the pressure of managing at a club with the gravity and demands of Rangers. We’ve already had managers who couldn’t handle that pressure. Michael Beale. Philippe Clement. These guys, who seemed on the surface to grasp it, didn’t. Martin may have played for us, but he didn’t play for us during a time when we were outright winners. He didn’t get it. And at the end of the day, how’s he going to get it as manager?

As we said before, we carried out a poll on Ibrox Noise. 95%, if not higher, were against this appointment. It is not one that is popular with the fans, and amazingly is even less popular than Beale was.

It is a poor appointment from a board who have totally cheaped out. A new board, brand new names, with all the shiny takeover stuff in place, and yet it’s the same old Rangers. So yes, forgive us if we’re not thrilled about this appointment. We’re not going to pretend that we think this is the right answer, and we don’t subscribe to the other Rangers fans, who, and there are a few, who would go with give him a chance FFS notion.

So, no, we don’t back Martin. We don’t think he’s the right guy at all. I mean, that’s abundantly obvious, to be fair. We’re not going to just randomly accept the wrong man at the wrong time.

This is not to say that we hope that Martin will fail, we just know that he will, he isn’t the right calibre, and just because Rangers appoint someone doesn’t mean that we agree with that appointment at all. We’re not going to say that we hope he fails, it’s not like that, but it certainly isn’t a case of supporting someone blindly just because they’ve been given the keys to the marble staircase. He’s the wrong appointment, we make absolutely no bones about that whatsoever, and we don’t support this, and a lot of fans agree.

Here we go yet again.
