Arab Cup 2025: Morocco clinches semi-final spot and eyes potential derby against Algeria
Morocco has booked its place in the semi-finals of the 2025 Arab Cup after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Syria in Al Rayyan. This triumph paves the way for a potential North African showdown, pending the outcome of Algeria’s clash with the United Arab Emirates.
Syria came out of the blocks strongly, but Morocco quickly responded. Bouftini dominated in the air from a corner, and Saadane forced the goalkeeper into action. Zouhzouh came agonizingly close to opening the scoring just before halftime, all under the watchful eye of the suspended Hamdallah.
The second half was firmly in Morocco’s favor. Despite Tissoudali going off injured and being replaced by Azarou, the Atlas Lions ramped up the pressure. Syria survived a goal-line scare, and Hadaya kept them in the game with a string of saves.
The relentless pressure finally paid off. In the 79th minute, Azarou pounced on a rebound off Hadaya to slot home the decisive goal. Morocco finally had the lead they were seeking.
Reduced to ten men after Moufid was sent off, Morocco endured a nervy finish. Bouftini even missed a golden chance to seal the win in stoppage time. But the essential was secured: a spot in the semi-finals, their first since 2012.
