Aramburu’s marathon season at right-back for Real Sociedad

Jon Aramburu is set to finish the season again as Real Sociedad’s most used right-back with 3,040 minutes, and among the squad’s most used players. With five league fixtures remaining, the 23-year-old has missed only three matches.

AS notes that pre-season began with five options for the role, Álvaro Odriozola, Hamari Traoré, Iñaki Rupérez, Aramburu and Aritz Elustondo. Injuries and departures then left the Venezuelan international with barely any respite, first under Sergio Francisco and, since December, under Pellegrino Matarazzo.

Odriozola tore his anterior cruciate ligament in February, just as he had rediscovered form under the American coach. Rupérez was injured in pre-season and Traoré left for Paris FC at the end of the window. With Elustondo rarely used on the flank, Aramburu has featured in 38 games across league and cup, starting 34 and appearing from the bench four times.

His rise has been steady since joining Sanse from Real Unión in 2023. He made his first-team debut on 1 November that year in the Copa against Buñol under Imanol Alguacil, then his La Liga bow came at Balaídos against Celta on 20 January 2024. That initial campaign brought 15 outings and 659 minutes, aided by Traoré’s Africa Cup of Nations absence and injuries to Odriozola and Elustondo.

The full-back’s breakthrough arrived in 2024-25, when he amassed 49 appearances and 3,352 minutes in La Liga, the Copa and the Europa League. He took the number 15 shirt in February 2025 and moved to number 2 last summer. This term he has nine yellow cards, so another booking would trigger a one-match suspension.
