By now, everyone is well aware that the long-awaited legal ‘battle’ between Manchester City and the Premier League is set to get underway later this year. Martyn Ziegler has previously reported for the Times that the hearing over Manchester City’s infamous ‘115’ case is set to begin late this month. But in light of recent events is the Premier League beginning to look like it is standing on shaky ground ahead of City’s hearing over 115 alleged breaches of the Premier League’s financial fair play regulations.

Leicester City had a win of sorts over the Premier League earlier this week.

International football is currently the focus of attention for on-pitch matters. But there has been a big story off the pitch to emerge this week. Earlier this week Leicester City had a win of sorts over the Premier League. The Foxes were charged with breaching the Premier League’s PSR regulations at the end of the 2022/23 period. Leicester City saw their charge of breaching the Premier League’s PSR rules overturned on a technicality earlier this week. But based on Leicester City’s ‘win’ over the Premier League, are the Premier League now on ‘shaky’ ground ahead of their ‘battle’ with Manchester City?

Manchester City have long maintained their innocence of all charges but is the Premier League’s case now on shaky ground?

First of all, it has to be said that Leicester City’s case is in no way linked to Manchester City’s case. Each case is an independent entity. No two cases are the same. That has to be said for clarity.

But a question has to be asked. Is the Premier League now on shaky ground ahead of their battle with Manchester City? If Leicester City can have a ‘win’ over the Premier League on a technicality of sorts, could some or all of the Premier League’s PSR regulations not hold up under intense legal scrutiny? That may not prove to be the case. It stands to reason that the Premier League would have every loophole closed in their PSR regulations. But Leicester City’s case shows that maybe the Premier League’s PSR regulations aren’t as watertight as they appear. If there are any ‘holes’ in the charges levied against Manchester City there is no doubt that City’s legal team will seize on them. That hasn’t been a thought previously considered since City’s charges were announced. But Leicester City’s legal team have shown that now it isn’t a far-fetched possibility.

What happens next between Manchester City and the Premier League will be fascinating to see unfold.

Ever since the 115 charges against Manchester City were announced the club has maintained their innocence. They have said from the beginning of the affair that they have a body of irrefutable evidence to support the club’s position. Based on that assertion, Manchester City may not need any loopholes to win their case. That fact remains to be seen. The long-awaited case will play out in the coming months. When a verdict is announced we will have the answer to that question.

But based on this week’s event the Premier League could be on even more shaky ground than first thought. This week’s events have added another intriguing layer to the ‘battle’ ahead between Manchester City and the Premier League.
