Arena das Dunas has taken legal action against Vasco da Gama to recover R$ 700,000 after a planned friendly with Montevideo Wanderers in Natal on 5 July last year was cancelled on the eve.
According to Globo.com, the stadium says an agreement provided a R$ 1 million fee to Vasco, with 70 percent paid in advance and R$ 300,000 due after the match, and it now seeks reimbursement.
The fixture was called off a day before it was due to be played. Montevideo Wanderers did not travel to Brazil, and those involved blamed failures by the event organisers to meet contractual guarantees.
Vasco, invited by Arena das Dunas and Liga Universitária Brasil, regards the organisers as having failed legal obligations, including ensuring the opponent’s presence in Natal as stipulated. The club says any losses will be addressed in court.
The stadium frames the case as a move to protect its interests and contractual governance, citing its view that the game did not take place because of Vasco’s breach. It maintains it met its obligations and seeks judicial redress to safeguard its assets and activities.
