Reigning champions vulnerable after round of 32 scare
The world champions were given an almighty scare by Cape Verde in the round of 32. Twice they lead the tournament debutants and twice they were pegged back before an Diney Borges own goal settled the tie in extra-time.
Having beaten Algeria in the group phase, Argentina will take on opponent from CAF (Confederation of African Football) for a third time at this summer’s expanded tournament, hoping to book a place in the quarter-finals.
Egypt, meanwhile, beat Australia on penalties to reach the last-16 of a World Cup for just the second time in their history, prompting emotional scenes from Mohamed Salah at the final whistle.
The winners of this tie progress to the quarter-finals where they will face the victors of Switzerland vs Colombia.

Gonzalo Montiel made his return from injury in the round of 32 win over Cape Verde, but Lionel Scaloni has doubts over Facundo Medina, Enzo Fernandez and Nicolas Gonzalez.
Medina and Fernandez are expected to be fit having battled with cramp in extra-time against Cape Verde, but Gonzalez is a doubt after twisting his ankle.

Argentina, for the first time at the tournament, showed vulnerabilites in their extra-time win over Cape Verde and this should give Egypt some confidence.
However, with defensive concerns and Salah’s effectiveness being limited due to a hamstring strain, it’s hard to make a case for a shock result here.
Argentina to win, 2-0.
