Liverpool suffered a disappointing 1-0 loss to Galatasaray in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie last week.

A solitary goal from Mario Lemina condemned the Reds to a second defeat of the season at Gala’s RAMS Park - following a reverse there during the league phase.

The Champions League is one of two tournaments in which Liverpool can still claim a trophy this season - with an FA Cup quarter-final showdown against Manchester City to come.

There is pressure on Arne Slot to win silverware this term after clinching the Premier League crown in his first season in charge. The top-flight title is a distant dream this season and the Anfield club are instead scrapping it out for a place in the top five.

Slot therefore is facing a crucial second leg at Anfield next week when Cimbom come to town.

Arne Slot will keep his job even if Reds are eliminated

No doubt the club and their supporters will be expecting to progress. If not the pressure will definitely get worse for the 47-year-old although a claim in Football Insider suggests a defeat will have no immediate impact on his future.

The Dutchman is likely to remain in his post even if elimination is recorded on Wednesday - and judgement will instead follow in summer. “It’ll definitely ramp up the pressure on him,” the report reads.

“Whether it’ll have a direct influence on a decision to be made on his future before the end of the season, I don’t think so.”

Slot will face the music at the end of the season

It comes amid reports that sporting director Richard Hughes is conducting an audit of Slot’s tenure and the spotlight will shine on the former Feyenoord boss once the dust settles at the end of a trying campaign.

Slot is under contract until the end of the 2026/27 season. It looked a certainty at one stage that his £6.5m deal would be extended.

But we are led to believe that any negotiations over a new deal are now on the back burner pending successful outcomes in this campaign.

Liverpool - it is reckoned - have got to secure Champions League football at the very least. Otherwise a season of indifferent form WILL come back to bite Arne Slot.
