Liverpool arrive at the weekend with eyes firmly on Alexander Isak, whose Premier League scoring touch will be vital as Arne Slot prepares his side for a demanding trip to Leeds United. The Swedish striker joined Liverpool in the summer for a British record fee after a long negotiation process and, although his season has been disrupted by fitness setbacks, the expectation remains enormous. Only after the November international break did he reclaim a consistent place in the starting lineup, giving supporters a clearer look at what he can bring to Slot’s evolving system.
Yet scrutiny has followed. Since his return, Alan Shearer has publicly questioned how Liverpool are using Isak, suggesting his involvement has been limited. That debate intensified after he scored against West Ham United but made little impact in the Sunderland match that followed. With Liverpool’s creative patterns still adapting to new personnel, the conversation around Isak’s touches has become a recurring theme.
In the latest pre-match press conference, Arne Slot was asked directly about Isak’s low number of touches. A reporter noted that the striker had just 14 across his last three starts before asking, “is that ideal for you?” Slot did not shy away from addressing the concern, instead turning the question into an opportunity for perspective.
He replied: “No, it’s not ideal for me, no. But do you know how much he had at Newcastle on average?” When the journalist admitted he did not know, Slot continued: “No? 22. So, in this league, strikers don’t touch the ball that much, but the few times they do touch it, it’s quite nice if they finish it off.”

His point was clear. The Premier League rarely accommodates high involvement from centre forwards, and Liverpool’s structure is designed to maximise quality rather than volume. Given that Isak continues to average only slightly fewer touches than at Newcastle, Slot seems confident his output will rise as the team stabilises.
Liverpool’s supply down the right flank has been hit by injuries, forcing Slot to deploy Joe Gomez, Curtis Jones and Dominik Szoboszlai at right-back. None are natural in that role and, particularly in Gomez’s case, the lack of attacking threat has reduced the volume of deliveries into the box for Isak.
That situation may soon improve. Slot confirmed encouraging news regarding squad availability, stating: “Joe Gomez got a knock against West Ham but was still able to start. He couldn’t make the full 90 minutes but I think he will be able to train again today. Conor Bradley has trained this week so I expect him to train today and then he is available to be in the squad tomorrow.”
Bradley’s return could be decisive. His natural attacking instincts and ability to hit early crosses should give Isak more consistent service. With Liverpool targeting another dominant display under Slot, the reintroduction of a recognised right-back might be the catalyst for unlocking the striker’s full threat in front of goal.
As Liverpool continue their Premier League title defence under Arne Slot, the spotlight remains intense on Isak’s integration. His movement, composure and finishing make him a pivotal figure in this evolving side. If the supporting cast settles and supply improves, Liverpool may soon see the benefits of their record investment.
