According to L'Équipe, Aron Dönnum has been brought back into the Toulouse squad for Wednesday’s Coupe de France quarter-final at Marseille, 21:00, after missing two matches on an internal decision apparently for inappropriate behaviour.
Coach Carles Martinez Novell said it is the season’s most important game and confirmed on Tuesday that Dönnum will feature, while his side are five Ligue 1 matches without a win. On 15 February, after a 1-2 defeat at Le Havre that Olivier Cloarec quickly labelled shameful, AFP reported that Dönnum exchanged words with his president.
The club’s stance did not shift last week. Before the 0-1 loss at Rennes on Sunday, Martinez Novell explained he had avoided discussing the matter while it could still change, but the decision stood and he respected it.
Dönnum declined further comment when asked on Tuesday. Around the club, the message is discretion and that his conduct has been sound since, including taking part in the 25 February open day with supporters and a subscribers’ evening, where one attendee noted he stayed longest for autographs and remained approachable.
In his absence, Toulouse struggled for ideas and cutting edge, scoring two goals in their last five league games. Expected to start at Marseille, Dönnum returns for his craft and energy, averaging 2.3 key passes leading to a shot, just behind Adrien Thomasson and level with Ousmane Dembélé, and 1.9 crosses per match, just behind Jonathan Clauss.
