Flamengo have set the timetable for Arrascaeta’s left wrist surgery. The club said in a statement that the Uruguay international is due in Rio on Wednesday afternoon, around 16:00 Brasília time, and will begin pre-operative procedures the next day.

He is expected to be admitted on Thursday morning for tests, with the operation to follow soon after to repair a left wrist fracture.

The procedure will be led by Fernando Sassaki, head of Flamengo’s medical department, alongside Roberto Feres, a specialist in this type of injury.

It is too early to set a recovery timeline, which will depend on the procedure and his progress. There is pessimism over his involvement against Estudiantes in the Conmebol Libertadores semi-finals.

The injury occurred in Seoul on Monday when he fell, braced with his left hand and immediately complained of forearm pain, then left the pitch. He was replaced by Rodrigo Salazar in the 32nd minute of the second half, looking clearly distressed. Initial assessment suggested a left forearm trauma and he underwent tests at a local clinic, before a fracture was confirmed.
