Rodolfo Arruabarrena returns to Boca, and recent history raises a stark question about comebacks. According to LaNumer12.com.ar, most second spells dip, so the Vasco faces a stiff test.
His first spell, from August 2014 to February 2016, set a high bar. Across 75 games he posted 68.44 per cent, 47 wins, 13 draws and 15 defeats, and lifted two trophies.
Carlos Bianchi is the benchmark. His 1998-2001 spell brought 64.37 per cent and major honours, the 2003-2004 return improved to 66.66 per cent with more silverware including another Intercontinental. In 2013-2014 he fell to 45.83 per cent, 26-21-25, no titles and clásicos 3 won, 4 lost.
Alfio Basile’s 2005-2006 tenure was rampant, 71.51 per cent in 55 games with five trophies and only seven defeats. The 2009 return lasted 21 matches, yielded 44.44 per cent and no titles, and matched those seven losses.
Miguel Ángel Russo led Boca to the 2007 Copa Libertadores, finishing on 60.71 per cent from 56 games. His 2020-2021 return delivered 57.62 per cent across 59 matches and two domestic titles. A third stint covered 13 games at 41.02 per cent, three wins, no silverware.
The trend is clear, only Bianchi’s second spell bucked the slide. Arruabarrena’s record inspires confidence, but his clásicos mark, three wins, four draws and eight defeats, is the obvious area to fix.
