Following his last-minute winner coming off the bench at the weekend against Stuttgart, Fabio Vieira was named in HSV’s starting lineup for their DFB Pokal last-16 match against Holstein Kiel on Wednesday night.
It turned out to be a very close game, with neither team able to open the scoring in the initial 90 minutes. Substitute Bakery Jatta eventually gave HSV the lead in the 107th minute, but Kiel equalised through Phil Harres in the 118th.
The game went to penalties, and after both teams converted their first, Kiel’s Marko Ivezic saw his effort saved to give Hamburg the chance to take the lead.
Vieira stepped up and powered a shot into the bottom corner, finding the net despite the goalkeeper going the right way.

Just when it was starting to seem like another positive outing for Vieira and HSV, the tide quickly turned. Kiel scored both of their next two spot-kicks, whilst HSV missed both of theirs, allowing earlier Kiel goalscorer Harres to step up and score to send his team through.
Vieira will be bitterly disappointed after a hard-working and effective individual performance. As well as his shootout goal, the Arsenal loanee created three chances, and he won six of his eight individual duels.
The showing was enough to earn Vieira a spot in Sofascore’s Team of the Week (shown below), but that won’t be much consolation after his team’s elimination from cup contention.

The highlights from the game are available here, but Vieira’s shootout goal isn’t included in the YouTube package. You can find that in the shootout compilation here.
