Arsenal have decided against a major Emirates Stadium expansion, opting instead for smaller upgrades aimed at improving matchdays and revenue.
The club said in a statement that they will prioritise steady evolution over a vast masterplan, pointing to work with catering partner Legends, the rollout of safe standing, and upgrades to hospitality, retail and visitor areas. The plan was outlined to supporters at a recent meeting.
A working group led by chief executive Richard Garlick was set up in 2024 to test the feasibility of extensive additions. After reviewing logistics and costs, seat volume was deemed a lower priority than modernising the current infrastructure.
Safe standing has been phased in at the Clock End this season, with an extension to the North Bank planned for next season. The approach avoids disruptive engineering such as raising the roof or extending stands.
Maintaining roughly 60,704 seats leaves the Emirates as England’s seventh-largest football venue, behind Wembley (90,000), Old Trafford (74,158), Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (62,850), London Stadium (62,500), Etihad Stadium (61,470) and Anfield (61,276).
Rivals Tottenham also benefit from a multi-purpose design that hosts NFL and major concerts, flexibility the Emirates was not built to match.
