Arsenal are reportedly interested in picking up Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret on a free transfer in the summer, while his agent Federico Pasorello says that there are ‘negotiations to be had’ with Napoli in the coming months.
Meret is currently into the final year of his contract at the Stadio Maradona, The Partenopei stopper has made 135 Serie A appearances since joining from Udinese back in 2018.
According to reports from FootballTransfers, Arsenal are keen to pick Meret up on a free transfer if he does not agree a new deal with Napoli, but the ‘keeper would likely serve as an understudy to current no.1 David Raya if he were to move to North London.
Meret’s agent, meanwhile, has confirmed that Napoli have been in contact to discuss the initial idea for a contract extension, but there is still work to be done on that front.
“We’ve been in contact, even before the (international) break. Alex is very happy with how the season is going, he’s been in Napoli for five years and he’s happy. “I don’t rule out the possibility of reaching an agreement, but there is still a negotiation to be had. The important thing is that the parties stay in contact.”
Meret has enjoyed a decent start to the 2024-25 season, keeping three clean sheets from his first five Serie A appearances this term.
He is currently recovering from the injury he picked up during the 0-0 draw with Juventus, and is expected to miss the upcoming matches against Empoli and Lecce.
