Exclusive: Islington North MP says Man City should be hit with ‘a significant points deduction that results in their inevitable relegation’

Arsenal superfan Jeremy Corbyn is calling for “seismic consequences” against Manchester City over its alleged mass rule-breaking including relegation from the Premier League.

Speaking to The Standard, the Islington North MP also called for the club to be fined millions of pounds to be reinvested into grassroots football.

Man City has reportedly been found guilty of the vast majority of 115 breaches of financial rules.

Mr Corbyn said: “This is a seismic judgement which demands seismic consequences.

“That includes a significant points deduction that results in their inevitable relegation.

“There should also be a substantial fine, the proceeds of which should all go to grassroots football,” which he later stressed should be in the millions of pounds.

The former Labour leader and now independent MP added: “The league should also seriously consider stripping them of their titles.

“If their titles weren’t won fairly, why should they keep them?

“Remember, underneath these breaches are countless trophies and titles that other clubs and fans should have celebrated.”

He also argued that “greed and selfishness in the Premier League is out of control”.

Man City strongly denies committing the alleged breaches and is said to be appealing the verdict.

Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher, a die-hard Man City fan, says he has been told that if it is found guilty of the alleged breaches, which he doubted, the club would get a fine and transfer ban.

There is said to be little appetite in the Premier League to strip Man City of any titles but such a move could ultimately be decided by an independent panel.

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy stressed it was in the interest of fans from all clubs that the dispute does not “drag on any longer”.

The eight time Premier League winners have been found guilty on virtually all counts of breaching the Premier League’s financial rules, according to reports.

The club were charged in February 2023 with more than 100 breaches of league rules.

The Athletic reported that City have been found guilty on almost all of those charges by an independent commission, but that City are to appeal.

If the verdicts stand a number of possible punishments are possible, including a huge points deduction, financial penalties, or removal from the Premier League.

Man City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has insisted that “nothing has changed” and “our confidence and intent in proving the club’s innocence is just as strong as when this began”.

The charges date back to the 2009-10 season, since which time City have won multiple major trophies.

David Bernstein, City chairman between 1998 and 2003, said: “I can’t give a view on the punishment. If they are found, after the appeal, guilty of 115 charges, my beloved club is going to face a very severe penalty.

“All I would say is that money is not sufficient, it would have to be something, unfortunately, more drastic than that.”
