Arsenal are pushing to sign Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez before Tuesday’s transfer deadline.
However, a move appears unlikely as the 26-year-old has returned to training with his club.
Alvarez missed several sessions due to illness, but he is now back in group training.
The forward has made it clear his ultimate ambition is to join Barcelona, but Atletico will not sell him to a direct rival.
They have shown a willingness to consider a big offer from Arsenal.
Alvarez has told manager Mikel Arteta he doesn’t want to join the Premier League champions.
Arsenal have made significant investments to bolster their squad this summer. They signed Christos Tzolis last month before completing moves for Bruno Guimaraes and Ezri Konsa.
The Gunners still want to sign a marquee forward and have set their sights on Alvarez.
The Argentina international is one of the best forwards in the world, known for his relentless work rate, clinical finishing and tactical intelligence.
He mainly operates as a striker but can also play on either wing.
With only two days left in the transfer window, it is unlikely Arsenal will secure a deal for Alvarez.
Arsenal previously pursued a transfer for Vinicius Junior, who ended up signing a new contract at Real Madrid.
