Arsenal have discussed signing Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres in January, according to the Independent.

The Gunners have been forced to shelve their plans of waiting until the summer before signing a striker after Gabriel Jesus sustained a serious injury.

Arsenal also have RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko and Brighton & Hove Albion’s Evan Ferguson on their radar as they look to bolster their attacking ranks during the January transfer window.

Gyokeres has bagged 32 goals in 30 appearances this term, and Arsenal may need to pay his €100 million release clause to have any chance of landing him this month.

Manchester United are hopeful of signing Gyokers this summer, and the Gunners have to make a move this month if they want him.

Ruben Amorim’s presence at Old Trafford could boost the club as they chase the Sporting striker and a reunion will likely appeal to him.

However, Arsenal can get a deal done if their project is enough to convince Gyokeres.

They need a quality number nine if they are to become regular Premier League title winners, and the Swedish international fits the bill.

They remain very much in the title race this term, with just four points separating them from leaders Liverpool. Bringing in a top finisher could turn the tide in their favour.
