Arsenal head to Manchester United in the Premier League this afternoon.
One of the great rivalries in English football resumes at Old Trafford. Arsenal’s title hopes are fading after falling 16 points behind leaders Liverpool, though the Gunners impressed in Europe in midweek. Mikel Arteta’s side thrashed PSV Eindhoven 7-1 in the Netherlands to take a giant step towards the Champions League quarter-finals.
Given their huge advantage, Arteta is likely to go with a full strength side this afternoon. Nottingham Forest moved within three points of Arsenal on Saturday, ahead of the latter’s game in hand. Arsenal have two games in hand on Liverpool.
Manchester United ended a three-game winless run by beating Ipswich in their last league fixture. Ruben Amorim’s side followed that result with a draw at Real Sociedad in the Europa League. The importance of that upcoming second leg with Sociedad could be a distraction, with United having little to play for in the Premier League. The Red Devils are 14th in the table, but beat Arsenal on penalties in the FA Cup in January.
Arsenal team news
After two goalless outings in the Premier League, Arsenal found their groove in Eindhoven on Tuesday night. Mikel Merino continues to deputise as an auxiliary forward in the absence of Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz, who will not play again this season.
Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli are still sidelined but edging closer to comebacks. The wingers could return after the international break. Takehiro Tomiyasu (knee) is also in the treatment room for the Gunners.
