Arsenal marked their Premier League title with a vast parade in London on Sunday, one day after Mikel Arteta’s side lost the Champions League final on penalties in Budapest. El Periódico Mediterráneo reports that more than 1.5 million people lined the route, producing a record title celebration in the country.
The event had been long planned and, had results gone differently, might have doubled as a Champions League celebration. Instead, after 22 years without the league, supporters revelled in the Premier despite the setback.
Roads were closed from 08:00, with four team buses setting off at 14:00. The procession lasted about two and a half hours across eight kilometres through Highbury, Islington and Angel.
The lead bus carried the men’s first-team squad with the Premier League trophy. Behind them travelled the coaching staff, the women’s team marking their FIFA Women’s Champions Cup success, then guests, club employees and Gunnersaurus.
Flares, smoke and a wall of red framed the scenes, with some fans arriving without sleep. Many treated the parade as a thank you to the team, proudly backing Arteta’s side despite the night in Hungary.
