Ethan Nwaneri (18) touched down in Marseille on Wednesday and in doing so, he is set to follow in the footsteps of one of his teammates at Arsenal, William Saliba (24).
Saliba joined Arsenal from AS Saint-Étienne back in 2019, but would have to go out on loan before getting his career up and running at the Emirates. That initially included a loan spell back at his formative club, before another at OGC Nice, and then at Olympique de Marseille.
It was his loan spell with OM, during the 2021/22 season, that was the springboard into the first team at Arsenal. Nwaneri will hope that his loan spell at the Vélodrome will have the same effect. The England youth international has struggled for minutes this season at Arsenal and so he is all set to complete a loan move (without a buy option) to Marseille.
He landed in the South of France on Wednesday and ahead of the move, briefly spoke to those gathered at the airport. “OM? It is one of the best clubs in the world, with great fans. William Saliba told me that it is one of the best clubs in the world […] Roberto De Zerbi is one of the best managers in the world,” said Nwaneri in a brief interview transcribed by Foot Mercato.
