Arsenal were set to open up a nine-point lead at the top when City were trailing 1-0 in the closing stages at Anfield, but Bernardo Silva equalised and Erling Haaland’s 93rd-minute winner from the penalty spot kept City alive.

As Sky Sports commentator Peter Drury put it: “The race is on.”

Arsenal still hold a six-point lead with 13 games to go and Mikel Arteta’s side remain favourites to be crowned champions.

The Gunners cruised to a 3-0 win over Sunderland on Saturday and have now recorded comfortable back-to-back victories since the setback of losing to Manchester United last month.

But City have breathed new life into the title race and the manner of their thrilling late win at Anfield could galvanise them in their bid to hunt down the Gunners.

Guardiola now wants his side to pile pressure on Arsenal, who still have to go to the Etihad in April.
