Myles Lewis-Skelly has been a regular for the Arsenal first team in recent weeks, so it was a surprise when he was completely absent from the squad to face GNK Dinamo on Wednesday.

Mikel Arteta confirmed why, explaining that the 18-year-old suffered an injury against Aston Villa at the weekend.

“He jarred his knee in the game against Villa and he thought it was okay when he finished the game,” Arteta said.

“The next day it wasn’t bad and then yesterday he wasn’t feeling right, and so he started the session and he wasn’t feeling good.

“So, we need some more tests tomorrow. Hopefully it is nothing big, but the games are coming very fast.”

As for whether Lewis-Skelly could recover in time for Arsenal’s next match against Wolves on Saturday, Arteta said: “I am not sure.”

The teenager has started five of Arsenal’s last seven Premier League fixtures, coming off the bench in one of the other two. His absence would certainly be a blow, as he looks to be cementing himself as Arteta’s preferred option.

The only upside is that Arsenal are currently blessed with multiple healthy left-back options.

Whilst Riccardo Calafiori, Oleksandr Zinchenko, and Kieran Tierney have had their injury struggles in the past, the trio were all fit to make Arsenal’s squad on Wednesday. Even if Lewis-Skelly is out at the weekend, Arteta has good players he can call upon.

Arsenal have struggled with multiple injuries in the same positions this season.

For example, Ethan Nwaneri, Bukayo Saka, and Raheem Sterling were all injured at once to slash the squad’s right-wing options, and William Saliba, Takehiro Tomiyasu, and Ben White are all out right now to leave Arsenal extremely light at right-centre-back and right-back.

One or two injuries can be managable, but three or more in the same position and pretty much any club in Europe would start to have problems.

Fortunately, the left-back position is much less at risk right now. As long as Lewis-Skelly’s scans come back with good news, that should continue to be the case.
