Mikel Arteta hailed Christos Tzolis’ impact after Arsenal began their Premier League title defence with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Coventry City at the Emirates.

Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard were on target as the Gunners made a commanding start to their campaign, with Tzolis also impressing on his Premier League debut for the club.

“I love that a player who has just been here for a few weeks gets that kind of energy every time he’s on the ball,” Arteta said on the Greece international.

“But I think he’s earned it. I think the way he has performed in the last few games has been phenomenal.

“What he transmits as a player, so direct, so incisive constantly, he wants to make things happen, and he has an incredible variety of actions to make the right decisions.

“Very, very happy with him.”

Arsenal were without another of their summer signings in Bruno Guimaraes, however, after the midfielder picked up an injury in last weekend’s Community Shield victory over Manchester City.

However, Arteta played down concerns over the severity of the problem and does not expect the Brazil international to face a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

“No, we don’t expect that to be weeks at all,” he said.

“Let’s see how he evolves this week. He didn’t even want to stop, he wanted to carry on, and we start to understand his character.

“But I don’t expect it to be a big issue.”
