Botafogo were eliminated by Cienciano in the Copa Sudamericana round of 16 in the early hours of Friday. According to Glorioso 1904, the home leg was marked by a glaring miss from former Benfica striker Arthur Cabral.
After a heavy 6-1 loss in Peru, the Brazilian side struck after eight minutes back in Rio. It was their first match since sacking coach Franclim Carvalho, formerly of Braga and B SAD.
Danilo Pereira scored it. In the 24th minute he lifted the ball over the goalkeeper with Cabral unable to provide the final touch, allowing a visiting defender to clear on the line.
The Brazilian forward has been a leading target for supporters’ criticism during this turbulent spell, having gone nine games without a goal. He was also sent off at the end of the match against Vitória, the final game under Carvalho.
This season Cabral, valued at nine million euros, has played 39 times for Botafogo, 19 in the Brasileirão, seven in the Copa Sudamericana, five in the Carioca Championship, three in the Libertadores and two in the Copa do Brasil. Across 2,515 minutes he has nine goals and two assists.
