AS Roma and Hellas Verona go head-to-head in Serie A on Sunday at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.
The hosts will be looking to maintain the momentum that has helped them push towards near the top of the table whilst Verona desperately seek their first league victory of the campaign.
Roma face significant injury concerns ahead of Sunday’s encounter. Paulo Dybala remains sidelined with a hamstring injury, with head coach Gian Piero Gasperini confirming the Argentine forward will not return until after the October international break. Summer signing Leon Bailey is also unavailable, continuing his rehabilitation from a muscle injury that has prevented him from making his debut since joining from Aston Villa.
Mario Hermoso and Brazilian wing-back Wesley have recovered from recent knocks and should be available for selection. Following his shock start in the Rome Derby, Lorenzo Pellegrini is expected to return to the starting eleven after once again making an impact off the bench against Nice in midweek.
The attacking options remain limited, with Artem Dovbyk competing with Evan Ferguson for the central striker role. Despite Dovbyk’s improved fitness levels, Gasperini has emphasised the need for better attacking movement throughout the team.
Verona received positive news regarding Roberto Gagliardini, who suffered a dislocated shoulder during the draw with Cremonese. Coach Paolo Zanetti confirmed the midfielder “has recovered quickly and will be an option for Sunday” after avoiding serious structural damage.
Summer signings Giovane and Gift Orban are expected to feature prominently in attack, with the pair having been rested for the Coppa Italia defeat to Venezia. Amin Sarr and Junior Ajayi would make way for the returning duo.
However, Zanetti faces several absences with Abdou Harroui, Daniel Mosquera, Tomas Suslov and Nicolas Valentini all sidelined through injury.
Roma arrive in excellent form following consecutive victories. Gasperini’s side secured a crucial 1-0 derby triumph over Lazio before recording a 2-1 away victory against Nice in their Europa League opener. The Giallorossi currently sit fourth in Serie A with nine points from four matches, having won three and lost one.
Despite their strong start, Gasperini has identified a concerning pattern: “We encounter issues after taking the lead. Perhaps our strategy shifts, and we focus on defending a 1-0 lead instead of pursuing an additional goal”.
Verona’s campaign has been characterised by frustration, with Paolo Zanetti’s side yet to register a single victory in Serie A this season. They have managed just three points from four matches, recording three draws and one defeat to sit 15th in the table.
Their most recent league outing saw them earn a creditable 1-1 draw at home against Juventus, with Gift Orban scoring a controversial penalty. However, their winless run now extends to five matches across all competitions following their Coppa Italia penalty shootout defeat to Venezia.
Possible AS Roma starting XI: Svilar; Hermoso, Mancini, Ndicka; Wesley, Cristante, Kone, Angelino; Soule, Pellegrini; Ferguson
Possible Hellas Verona starting XI: Montipo; Nunez, Nelsson, Frese; Belghali, Akpra Akpro, Serdar, Bernede, Bradaric; Giovane, Orban
