Bruno Fernandes squandered a scoring chance from the penalty spot, before Mathias Jensen struck deep in stoppage time to wrap up the game.

The latest setback means Amorim’s future at Old Trafford has become the centre of speculation once again.

United spent over £230 million in the summer to improve the squad, but Amorim has overseen a disastrous start to the new season.

After defeats to Arsenal, Manchester City and Brentford, the Red Devils are sitting 14th in the Premier League table with just seven points.

Should United dismiss Amorim?

Since taking over from Erik ten Hag in November last year, Amorim has recorded just nine victories in 33 league matches. That is a win percentage of 27.3 per cent, lower than all the previous managers since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.

Despite clear evidence that his system is not working, the former Sporting Lisbon boss is refusing to adapt or change his tactics.

His team selections have also raised a lot of eyebrows as Senne Lammens is yet to play a game despite Altay Bayindir’s struggles in goal.

Kobbie Mainoo was one of the top performers during Ten Hag’s reign, but his role has been reduced under Amorim. The youngster hasn’t started a top-flight game this season.

Fernandes is regarded as one of the best attacking midfielders, but the Portuguese has been featuring him in one of the two deeper midfield roles.

The 31-year-old is not comfortable playing in the new position as he hasn’t produced his best form this campaign.

Fernandes missed his penalty against Brentford, won zero aerial duels and lost possession of the ball on 18 occasions.

United have been consistently sacking managers since Sir Alex’s departure in 2013, and dismissing Amorim will not solve the club’s problems.

But there are currently no signs of improvement under the 40-year-old despite significant summer investments, and it makes sense if INEOS decide to wield the axe on his tenure.
